Stay at home dad jobs
The concept of stay at home dad jobs is a relatively new one, as men were traditionally considered to be the breadwinners and women, the natural choice for the nurturing, household managing role. However, industrialization and equal pay have made it possible for women to be just as successful in their careers as men. Having invested time and effort into their carriers many women feel reluctant to leave it all behind for the sake of raising a family and moving to the suburbs. In fact many families are now in a situation where women earn more than their husbands, and have a better health and insurance plan. Leaving their jobs to be supported by a less successful husband, with a smaller salary seems to brink on insanity, and men have come to realize this. This is also confirmed by statistics showing that the number of stay at home dads is on the rise. Having realized that they can be just as good a nurturers as women, men are now actively looking for stay at home dad jobs, in order to stay in touch with their professional background, while at home with the children. Having given up on the traditional idea of what the roles within a family should be, men are finding it easier to assume the role of stay at home dad, and family nurturer.
The tuff economic situation may have had an influence on this development, as more families have come to realize, that the sensible reason for deciding which parent is to stay at home with the children, is not gender, but the salary and benefits one can support the family with. As the number of successful women is on the rise stay at home dad jobs are also in more demand than ever. Although the social and job networks for dads are not as well developed, as for moms, due to their vastly smaller number, there is a community out there, to which one can reach out to. More and more blogs are starting to appear, as well as forums where stay at home dads can debate issues they face on a daily basis, or pure and simply escape the isolation of their new role. They are often educated men, with previously lucrative carriers, who have made a conscious choice to be more active within their family, and effectively co-parent their children, instead of merely providing for their material needs.
However, most dads, although they are enjoying spending time with their children, feel the need to stay active professionally, either in order to supplement the family income, or in order to be able to find work later, once they want to return to work full time. Returning to work full time is much easier if you can put stay at home dad jobs on your resume, instead of just stating how wonderful it was to spend that time with your child. Although there are studies proving how beneficial the active participation of a father in the life of a young child is, the stigma of stay at home dad is still pretty powerful, prompting many employers to shy away from hiring former stay at home dads.
There are several solutions to finding stay at home dad jobs, although in most cases this will prove more difficult, than for traditionally accepted stay at home moms. One solution would be to work evenings or weekends, when your partner is not at work. This will mean of course that you won’t have a lot of family time or much of a social life, but it will keep you active in your professional field and more employable in the future. You can choose to only work part time, which will cut down your hours, and give you a chance to spend more time with your spouse. How much you can or are willing to work, in terms of invested hours, will of course depend on your family’s financial situation.
If you are thinking about starting a new carrier, once you return to work full time, then it is perhaps a better choice for you to sign up for classes in that field and earn a degree. Use this time to gain new skills, rather than do stay at home dad jobs, in order to be better qualified for the field you are looking to be actively involved in, in the future. Additionally, when deciding to return to work, make sure you have a short and concise answer to the questions regarding your stay at home dad years, so that the focus of the interview stays on your professional qualifications and experience, and not on the oddity of having been actively involved in your child’s upbringing, note the irony. Many employers seem to think that stay at home dads are not good employees to have, due to their prolonged absence from the work field. This is why you need to help them focus on other aspects of your personality, and not have the conversation derail to a subject that is most likely utterly unimportant for your employment and carrier. It will most likely take a couple more decades for employers to get used to the idea that it is ok for dads to stay at home and raise their children, as well, and realize that this will not render them less valuable or less employable.
